Emergency responders from multiple agencies were called into action Tuesday afternoon following reports of a bridge collapse on Stillwater Avenue in Old Town, prompting a large-scale response and the activation of a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) protocol.
According to officials, at approximately 1:50 p.m., Milford Fire Department Chief 800 and Ambulance 809 were dispatched as part of the emergency response after initial reports indicated that multiple people may have been injured in the collapse. Due to the potential severity of the incident, command personnel from Old Town Fire Rescue (OTFR) requested assistance from several surrounding agencies to ensure adequate resources were available.
As crews arrived on scene and began assessing the situation, it was quickly determined that the incident involved one injured individual rather than multiple victims as originally feared. While the scale of the emergency was reduced, responders remained focused on safely reaching and rescuing the patient.
Firefighters, EMS personnel, and support agencies worked together to carefully remove the injured person from the collapse area and provide medical care before transporting the patient to a nearby emergency department for further evaluation and treatment. The individual’s condition has not been publicly released.
Officials praised the coordinated efforts of all departments involved, noting that the rapid response and cooperation between agencies helped ensure the situation was managed effectively and safely.
Even as units prepared to clear the bridge collapse scene, emergency services remained busy. Ambulance 809 was redirected to a separate medical call in Orono, responding to assist while many regional resources were still committed to the Old Town incident.
The event also highlighted the dedication of Milford’s emergency personnel. Department leaders reported that a significant number of Milford firefighters and EMS members immediately began making their way toward the station to provide coverage and support during the unfolding emergency, even though many were ultimately canceled before arrival.
Officials expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by their personnel and the teamwork displayed by all responding agencies.
While the incident fortunately resulted in fewer injuries than initially feared, it served as a reminder of the importance of regional cooperation among emergency services when responding to unexpected and potentially dangerous situations.
