The medical world, the orthopedic trauma community, and countless friends across Colorado and beyond are mourning the unexpected passing of Dr. Jason W. Stoneback, MD, who died on July 28, 2026, at the age of 47. Remembered as an exceptional surgeon, innovator, mentor, husband, and friend, Jason’s life was defined by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
Tributes from those who knew him describe Jason as a person with a rare combination of strength, humility, humor, and genuine kindness. One friend reflected on their first meeting during Jason’s early research into osseointegration, a field focused on advanced limb restoration, recalling not only his groundbreaking work but also their shared passion for rodeo and the western lifestyle. For many, Jason’s influence extended far beyond medicine—he was someone who made people feel valued and cared for.
Born on September 1, 1978, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Wayne and Sonja Stoneback, Jason grew up with a passion for learning, adventure, and service. After attending the International School of Manila, he continued his education at the University of Memphis and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 2002. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2006 before completing orthopedic residency training at the University of Colorado and a trauma fellowship at Saint Louis University.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Stoneback became nationally recognized for his leadership in orthopedic trauma, limb restoration, and osseointegration research. He served as a professor in the Departments of Orthopedics and Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and held leadership roles at the University of Colorado Hospital, including Chief of Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Surgery.
His passion for improving patient outcomes led him to establish and direct the Limb Restoration Program and the Bone-Anchored Limb Research Group (BALRG). Through these programs, Jason helped transform the lives of patients facing devastating injuries and amputations, offering not only medical expertise but also hope for a renewed future.
Despite his many professional achievements and awards, including the Distinguished Physician Award and Pioneer Award, those closest to Jason say his greatest legacy was his character. He was known for treating patients like family and finding deep fulfillment in helping people regain independence and return to the lives they loved.
Outside of medicine, Jason embraced life fully. He enjoyed team roping, hunting, marksmanship, skydiving, and spending time with his wife, Gin Stoneback, family, and friends. He was deeply involved with organizations including the Roundup Riders of the Rockies and the National Western Stock Show, where he shared his love for community and the western way of life.
Jason is survived by his wife, Gin; his parents, Wayne and Sonja; his brother, Matthew; extended family members; colleagues; friends; and countless patients whose lives he changed forever.
A memorial service honoring Dr. Stoneback will be held on Monday, August 31, at 9:00 a.m. at the George & Barbara Eidsness Arena in Denver, Colorado. A memorial fund established in his name will continue supporting limb restoration, osseointegration, and orthopedic trauma initiatives.
Though his life ended far too soon, Dr. Jason Stoneback leaves behind a legacy of healing, innovation, friendship, and love that will continue inspiring generations to come. His healing hands may be gone, but the lives he touched will forever carry his memory.
