Olivier Lebas Falling Accident, France, Death: Respected Rear Admiral Olivier Lebas Died In Pyrénées Europe

We have learned with immense sadness of the accidental death of Rear Admiral Olivier Lebas, who passed away yesterday in the Pyrénées. His death is a profound loss to the French Navy, the defense community, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

As a General Officer of the French Navy, Admiral Lebas devoted several decades of his life to serving France with distinction. A highly respected naval fighter pilot, he rose through the ranks through his professionalism, courage, leadership, and unwavering sense of duty. Among his most notable assignments, he commanded the Charles de Gaulle, France’s flagship aircraft carrier, a position that reflected the confidence placed in his abilities and judgment.

Throughout his distinguished career, Olivier Lebas went on to hold several of the French Navy’s most senior responsibilities. He served as Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic and later as Commander-in-Chief for the Atlantic, carrying significant responsibilities for France’s maritime security, defense, and strategic interests.

Even after leaving active military service, Admiral Lebas remained deeply committed to the defense of France and questions of national sovereignty. Through his work within Airbus, he continued contributing his experience and expertise to the broader defense and aerospace community.

His remarkable career will be remembered for his sense of duty, commitment, command, and faithful service to the Nation.

This tragedy also carries a painful resonance. Almost three years to the day after the tragic disappearance of General Jean-Louis Georgelin in the Mont Valier massif, the Pyrénées have once again become the scene of the loss of one of France’s distinguished military leaders. It is a terrible coincidence that makes this bereavement even more poignant for the French military community.

During this exceptionally difficult period, our deepest condolences go to Admiral Lebas’s family, relatives, and loved ones. Our fraternal thoughts are also with his former comrades-in-arms, colleagues, and the entire community of the French Navy.

Respect, gratitude, and recognition to this great sailor, who dedicated his life to serving France.

Rest in peace, Admiral.
